PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR

Samantha Shune, PhD, CCC-SLP

Samantha is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Communication Disorders and Sciences Program at the University of Oregon. Her research and clinical interests include the effects of healthy and pathologic aging on swallowing and the mealtime process. She is particularly interested in better understanding the shared mealtime and food-related activities as opportunities to therapeutically target improved quality of life for older adults, healthy and otherwise. Prior to returning to school for her PhD and throughout her doctoral program, she worked as an ASHA certified speech-language pathologist in various medical settings (inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, acute care), with a particular focus on dysphagia and stroke rehabilitation. In addition to her research, she currently teaches in the area of medical speech-language pathology and organizes a swallowing disorders support group.

David Bayne, MS, CCC-SLP (graduated 2023)

David is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at Ithaca College. His clinical and research interest include dysphagia in progressive neurological diseases and how this impacts not only the individual, but the caregivers involved as well. His goal is to foster a deeper understanding of the psyco-social impacts of feeding-related behaviors and how to harness these therapeutically to promote healthy mealtime interactions. Prior to returning to academia, he worked as an ASHA certified SLP in acute care, inpatient/outpatient rehab, and radiology with a primary focus on dysphagia diagnosis and rehabilitation. Outside of classes, he is passionate about hiking, yoga, and cooking with friends.
Bedoor Nagshabandi, MA, CCC-SLP (graduated 2023)

Bedoor is currently a Lecturer at Princess Nourah University in Saudi Arabia. She is interested in dysphagia education and training, particularly for healthcare professionals and caregivers (e.g., nurses). She has previously worked at acute settings in hospitals with the adult population and she was the head of the Speech Pathology and Audiology Department at Princesses Nourah University. Bedoor enjoys traveling and trying different food from different cultures.
Ting-fen Lin, PhD, CCC-SLP (graduated 2021)

Ting-fen is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Deaf Studies at Fresno State. She aspires to optimize care for those with swallowing disorders in a comprehensive manner and to improve the quality of life for the people with dysphagia and their loved ones. She previously worked primarily in the acute care setting with the adult population. Ting-fen is also a wellness advocate and frequently offers SKY Happiness Retreats around campus and in the community. Ting-fen enjoys cooking and trying foods of different cultures.

RECENT MASTERS STUDENTS

Claire Malany

Claire is second-year graduate student. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Montana where she studied Communication Disorders and Sciences and Psychology. She hopes to be able to work with in a medical setting after graduation. She enjoys running, backpacking, and her favorite food is any form of vegetarian curry.

Amy Selven

Amy is a second-year Master’s student in Communication Disorder and Sciences. Previously, Amy studied Interior Architecture at the University of Oregon, but was pulled to a career in speech language pathology due to her desire to work and communicate with people every day. She still hopes to use her creative energy while working with adults and children in the future. Her favorite foods include, avocados and brie cheese!

Liz Stump

Liz is a first-year graduate student. She completed her undergraduate degree in English and postbac in CDS at the University of Oregon and she hopes to one day work with kids in schools. Besides language and books, she loves baking, hiking, gardening, attempting to work out, and the occasional session of dungeons and dragons. Her favorite thing to eat is anything sweet!

Magda van Leeuwen

Magda is second-year graduate student. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Oregon where she studied Communication Disorders and Sciences and Spanish. She hopes to be able to work with Spanish speakers in a medical setting after graduation. She also wants to learn how to bake her own bread. She enjoys running, reading, and her favorite food is anything with peanut butter and banana.

Lija Jones (Honors Thesis Student)

Lija is a junior majoring in Communication Disorders and Sciences and minoring in both Special Education and Psychology. She hopes to one day become a speech pathologist and work at an elementary school. She loves Italian food, especially sun-dried tomato gnocchi!

Emily Webster

Emily is a senior majoring in Communication Disorders and Sciences, with minors in Special Education and Disability Studies. She hopes to one day work as a speech-language pathologist in an elementary school setting, but her love for food and cooking brought her here. Her favorite food is homemade pizza, or pad thai!

Cameron Davis (Honors Thesis Student) (2020 Graduate)

Cameron is a recent graduate of the University of Oregon, majoring in Communication Disorders and Sciences and minoring in Special Education.  They hope to someday work as a speech pathologist in a children’s hospital and to write a book.  They are a native Oregonian and enjoy learning about new things, science fiction, baking, podcasts, knitting, playing piano, singing, and tennis.  Their favorite foods are cheesecake, soup, and chicken tikka masala.

Rachel Gulliford (2020 Graduate)

Rachel recently completed her master’s degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences at the University of Oregon. After graduation, she would like to work in a medical setting and is especially interested in patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke, and swallowing disorders. Her favorite food is waffles.

Jenna Miller (2020 Graduate)

Jenna Miller was a former postbac student. She has many interests including learning languages, gardening, sewing, reading, dancing, and weightlifting. She has also been bartending for almost a decade and loves to try new cocktails in fancy bars. Jenna’s favorite food is anything from South Asia, preferably hot, fried and full of flavor!

Tess recently completed her graduate degree from the University of Oregon. She moved from Thailand to Los Angeles in 2011, which was challenging. However, moving to Oregon has been one of her favorite adventures. Being a food lover brought her to join the O-SEE lab. In the future, she believes that she can bring her love of food to her clients. As a positive person overall, Tess is ready for her new adventure in this cool profession!

Marissa White (2020 Graduate)

Marissa recently graduated from the Master’s Program in Communication Disorders and Sciences. She is originally from Arizona but loves living in Oregon and wants to stick around after graduation! She is very interested in the medical side of speech-language pathology and wants to work in an acute care setting in the future. Some of her favorite foods are pizza and veggie burritos!

Rachael Iverson (2019 Graduate)

Rachael graduated from UO’s Communication Disorders and Sciences program, where she also completed her undergrad. She also completed the bilingual specialization program. She is considering a direction in medical Speech-Language Pathology. Her favorite food is a fresh peach!

Hanna Lee (2019 Graduate)

Hanna is a Master’s graduate of the Communication Disorders and Sciences program. She is hoping to eventually work in acute care and is very interested in dysphagia. Her favorite foods are Korean barbeque and sushi.

Mikayla Lindsey (2019 Graduate)

Mikayla graduated from the University of Oregon with a major in Communications Disorders and Sciences and minor in Sociology.  She has many aspirations, but a few of them include, becoming a spunky speech-language pathologist, becoming a consistent tennis player, and becoming an even better artist. She enjoys research, American Sign Language, friends, and outdoor activities like walking her dog and hiking! Her favorite food is taco salad.

Meredith graduated from the Communication Disorders and Sciences graduate program. Originally coming from Ohio, she is loving Oregon and the program! Her hope is to find her niche within the medical setting (because it is all so interesting!). Her favorite (gluten-free) foods include fruits, peanut butter, and Indian cuisine.

Chloe Nightingale (2019 Graduate)

Chloe completed the undergraduate Communication Disorders and Sciences program with a minor in Cultural Anthropology. Some of her goals include becoming a Speech Pathologist who works with adults in a medical setting and to read every book on Powell’s Books’ “25 Books to Read Before You Die” list. She enjoys traveling, writing, history, coffee, true crime, stand up comedy, and basset hounds. Her favorite food is Dolma, which she tried for the first time in Greece this year.

Bri graduated from the Communication Disorders and Sciences undergraduate program. A few of her favorite things include exploring new things, working with children, and eating! Her favorite food is Pho.

Tani Doherty (MA Thesis Student) (2018 Graduate)

Tani graduated with her Master’s in Communication Disorders and Sciences. She is interested in medical speech-language pathology, particularly dysphagia. Her favorite food is sushi.

Nicole Filatov (2018 Graduate)

Nicole graduated from the Communication Disorders and Sciences Master’s program. She is a first-generation American who is fluent in Russian and is fascinated by the brain, language, and culture. She loves working with both kids and adults, but is geared more towards a medical setting in which she can help individuals with neurological impairments and degenerative disorders. Nicole has many favorite foods including Korean barbecue, sushi, pho, ice cream, and really anything with cheese.

Tsoleene Partamian (2018 Graduate)

Tsoleene graduated with a Master’s degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences. She has many areas of interest including aphasia, voice, AAC, and dysphagia, and plans on working in a hospital setting with the older population. Her favorite food is Mexican and she believes that every meal could be made into a taco if you try hard enough.

Mckenzie Sachs (2018 Graduate)

Mckenzie obtained her Master’s student in Communication Disorders and Sciences at the University of Oregon. Current clinical interests include: early intervention, hearing loss, autism spectrum disorder, and alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) and sensory processing disorder. Though she hopes to work with children in the future, she is very interested in the medical population for speech-language pathology. Her favorite category of food is Mexican, particularly burritos.

Anyasha Aragon-Herbert (Honors Thesis Student) (2018 Graduate)

Anyasha graduated with a double major in Communication Disorders and Sciences and German. She hopes to become a speech language pathologist and work in a medical setting with a potential for research opportunities. Her favorite food is lasagna!

Megan Hutton (2018 Graduate)

Megan graduated with a degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences and a minor in Psychology. She hopes to become a Speech-Language Pathologist. She wants to work in a medical setting but is still exploring school settings. Her favorite food is sushi burritos.

Susie Nam (MA Thesis Student) (2017 Graduate)

Susie graduated with her Master’s degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences. She has a background in psychology and neuroscience – the brain is fascinating! She is currently working in the medical setting (SNF). She particularly enjoys Japanese food, but tends to enjoy most food.

Christina Patton (2017 Graduate)

Christina graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders and Sciences and a minor in Spanish. After graduation she will be continuing her studies as a CDS graduate student here at the U of O. In the future, she would love to work with children in early intervention settings. Carne asada burritos are her favorite food!

Alison Stewart (2017 Graduate)

Alison is a graduate of the CDS program and thinks that she has found her passion in the medical side of Speech-Language Pathology. She aims to one day work in the hospital setting with children with Dysphagia. Alison’s favorite food is all types of fruit, especially nectarines.

Cassidy White

Cassidy majored in Communication Disorders and Sciences. Her goals include becoming a speech pathologist and working with adults who have suffered from traumatic brain injuries. However, she has a wide range of interests and is also passionate about working with children. Her favorite food is kale salad.
